What is financial abuse

Financial abuse is when a perpetrator extends power and control into a victim’s financial situation.

Examples of financial abuse include:

  • Providing an allowance and closely monitoring how you spend it
  • Preventing you from accessing bank accounts.
  • Preventing you from working
  • Spending on credit cards without permission
  • Stealing money from you

Financial abuse varies, it may be subtle tactic such as manipulation or more demanding and intimating tactics. Financial abuse is one of the most powerful methods of keeping a victim trapped in an abusive relationship.
